The Kanyakumari District Fishermen Sangams’ Federation (KDFSF) oversees the critical process of fish auctions for its member Fish Marketing Societies (FMS). These auctions are a vital component of the local economy, ensuring that the fishers receive a fair and transparent price for their catch while maintaining control over the first point of sale.
Conducted at the beach level, these auctions are managed by the FMS, where the day's catch is sold either through direct sale to wholesalers and export companies or via a competitive bidding process. The auction system has been instrumental in eliminating the influence of middlemen, allowing the fishers to gain more profit from their labor.
Through KDFSF’s guidance, the Fish Marketing Societies have implemented a structured system where each member is provided with a "Chitta" (sea shore bill) for their auctioned fish. This bill is then presented at the society office for payment, ensuring a transparent process. Deductions for service charges, compulsory savings, and loan repayments are handled efficiently, empowering the fishers with financial independence and security.
